MMR Catch-up Campaign

The MMR immunisation catch up programme is to reduce the risk of a measles epidemic. This is to target children and young people aged 13 months to 18 years who have not received MMR vaccinations.
Sessions with a nurse or a health visitor are available to try and catch children off school. We strongly urge people who have not received their MMR vaccinations to attend as measles can have serious complications.

Mumps and Mumps Vaccination

The Risk

There have been some cases of Mumps and mumps like illnesses locally this term. This is a viral illness that is very easily spread from person to person. We suspect that there may be more cases.

What can you do about it?

In order to give you some protection from this infection in the future, Student Health with support from the Health Protection Agency, strongly recommend that students aged between 16 and 25 who have not had 2 MMR vaccinations should attend their GP Practice for vaccination. (If you are over 25 and you have any queries about whether you should have the vaccination please contact your own GP for advice).

The MMR does not give immediate protection but takes about 3 weeks to stimulate the immune response so the sooner you have it the better.

What to do if you develop Mumps?

If anyone develops symptoms of mumps (swelling and pain of the parotid salivary glands behind the jaw and below the ears) they should seek advice from their GP at the earliest opportunity.

If the diagnosis is confirmed the student will be encouraged to restrict contact with others during the infectious period (while symptoms are present and for a few days afterwards).

Treatment of the illness is limited to paracetamol, rest, and plenty of fluids.

If you think you might be vulnerable to Mumps please go to your GP or Student Health for your vaccination
